San Diego is known as one of America's great cities, and for good reason. From gorgeous beaches, hills, and canyons to its thriving urban neighborhoods, San Diego has something for a wide variety of lifestyles.
If you're thinking of moving to San Diego, it's easy to understand why you'd want to live in this sunny Southern California destination. But considering San Diego is California's second-largest city, how do you find a neighborhood that's right for you? One factor many renters consider is walkability, especially if they'd like convenient access to restaurants, shops, parks, transit, and other everyday destinations.
Fortunately, San Diego has several highly walkable neighborhoods, particularly in and around downtown.
Walkability generally refers to how easy it is to reach everyday destinations on foot. If you enjoy walking to restaurants, biking to nearby destinations, or taking public transportation to entertainment and errands, a neighborhood's walkability may be an important part of your apartment search.
One of the most widely used measures is Walk Score, which evaluates locations based in part on their proximity to amenities such as grocery stores, restaurants, parks, schools, and other destinations. Walk Score also considers factors such as block length and intersection density.
The five Walk Score categories are:
According to Walk Score, San Diego has an overall Walk Score of 53 and is the 18th most walkable large city in the United States. While the city as a whole is considered "Somewhat Walkable," individual neighborhoods can score much higher.
Walk Score can be a useful starting point, but it's worth looking at the exact address you're considering. Hills, major roads, sidewalk conditions, transit access, construction, and the destinations you personally visit can all affect how walkable a location feels in everyday life.
The Gaslamp Quarter is one of Downtown San Diego's best-known dining, nightlife, and entertainment districts and is currently the city's fourth-most walkable neighborhood. With a Walk Score of 97, it's considered a Walker's Paradise.
Restaurants, bars, shops, and entertainment venues line the neighborhood's streets, while Petco Park sits along its eastern edge. Nearby cultural and family-friendly destinations include the New Children's Museum, San Diego Convention Center, waterfront, and USS Midway Museum.
Downtown also offers access to trolley and bus service, giving residents additional options for getting around without driving for every trip.
Do you think this might be the area for you? Consider CentrePointe, an Essex apartment community with convenient access to Downtown San Diego. Residents enjoy amenities including a fitness center, tennis court, dog park, pool, and spa.
What began as an Italian fishing community has grown into San Diego's most walkable neighborhood. With a Walk Score of 98, Little Italy offers a vibrant mix of restaurants, cafés, boutiques, galleries, residences, and public spaces within a compact downtown setting.
Little Italy is especially known for its dining scene and the Little Italy Mercato Farmers' Market. Residents and visitors can also walk to destinations including Waterfront Park and the Maritime Museum of San Diego, while nearby trolley stations provide connections to other parts of the city.
East Village is another "Walker's Paradise," with a current Walk Score of 95. The neighborhood offers restaurants, coffee shops, parks, entertainment, residential buildings, and convenient access to Downtown San Diego.
Petco Park is located in East Village and serves as the home of the San Diego Padres as well as a venue for concerts and other events. The neighborhood is also close to the Gaslamp Quarter and connected to other areas of San Diego through trolley and bus service.
